We recently celebrated the Feast of Purim, a biblical celebration marking the deliverance of the Jews from the hands of their enemies during the captivity in Persia. The feast commemorating the deliverance is described in the Book of Esther as a holiday of rejoicing, feasting and sending portions to one another (Esther 9:19).
During the feast of Purim, we recite the Story of Esther and dress in costumes to show that what is seen outwardly often disguises the true heart and intentions that reside within. The story of Esther is full of disguises; Esther hides her Jewish heritage, Haman (the antagonist) masks his hatred of the Jews, and even God Himself veils His moving behind the cloak of humanity. In fact, a key point of the Book of Esther is that the name of God is never mentioned directly although His working is seen throughout the story.
As Christians, we celebrate Purim in joyful recognition that though we were marked for destruction by decrees against us, God through Jesus Christ has rendered those decrees powerless and made us alive with Him (Col 2:13-14). And as it was for Queen Esther, though His working in our lives may not always be evident, we know that He is always there, working all things for good for those who love Him (Rom 8:28).
This year our telling of the story of Esther was done through a Purim spiel; that is a humorous retelling of the story. In our case, it was a Motown-based musical performed by our children and young adults. After the musical, we stood and declared our thankfulness to God for His faithfulness—repeated throughout history—to deliver all of His people, Jews and gentiles alike, from that which would try to hinder us in our desire to love God and live according to His word.
The story of Esther is also a vivid reminder of the vicious intent of God’s enemies to fight His purposes even up to the destruction of those He has chosen as His people. Throughout the retelling of Esther, our hearts were touched with a deep love for the Jewish people and all that they have faced as a result of being called by His name!
After the musical and declarations, we enjoyed a time of fellowship and feasting. In keeping with the idea of sharing portions, many brought appetizing treats and we ate our fill as we sang, danced and continued to rejoice in the freedom God has given us in Christ to live our lives for Him!
